Masterclass Language Planning & Policy

The University of Aruba (UA)Center for Lifelong Learning, invites you to take part of Masterclass: Language Planning & Policy.

Prof. Thomas Ricento of the University of Calgary will facilitate two masterclasses on language planning and policy at the University of Aruba. During the masterclasses prof. Ricento will zoom in on language policy as a tool for the promotion of an inclusive society. He will discuss experience – positive and negative – with language policy in a couple of case studies and he will discuss the application of these experiences with the participants in the masterclass.

 

Masterclass 1:

Prof. Thomas Ricento will discuss aspects of Canadian Language Policy (Official Bilingualism: English and French), the status of non-official languages under Official Bilingualism, and some of the challenges and effects of the policy on the teaching and learning of non-official languages in Canada.

Masterclass 2:
In this class, professor Ricento will talk about the development and great success of a model bilingual program (Mandarin-English) in the Edmonton Public School Board that was founded in the early 1980s and is still going strong; he will present findings on what is perhaps the gold standard of research on the education of language minority students in the U.S.A. (Thomas and Collier); and he will comment on the role and effects of politics, the courts, and state referenda on decisions about funding priorities and pedagogical approaches in the teaching of English to English language learners in the U.S.A.

Who is the facilitator?

Thomas Ricento is Professor and Research Chair at the University of Calgary, Canada. He has published widely in the field of language policy and on the politics of language in North America. He was a Fulbright Professor in Colombia (1989) and Costa Rica (2000), and a visiting Professor at Universities in Chile, Germany, Spain, and Switzerland. He was Director of English Language Programs at the Japan Center for Michigan Universities, Hikone, Japan from 1989-1991.
