The accidental mentor: good guidance in the small-scale

January 27, 2016

The University of Aruba (UA) in collaboration with the University College Utrecht cordially invites you to a public lecture as part of the UAUCU undergraduate research exchange program: The Accidental Mentor: good guidance in the small-scale classroom.

Small-scale classrooms allow instructors to step out from behind their lecterns and to connect with students as individual learners.

Personal interaction in the classroom helps teachers see the barriers to learning and growth that individual students face, and encourages students to actively seek their teachers’ advice. In this context, teachers are inevitably confronted with decisions about providing guidance to students, and are called upon to serve as advisors, role models or mentors. This presentation reflects on the importance of guidance in teaching, and provides a framework for the teacher’s broader role as educator.

The facilitator for this lecture is Jocelyn Ballantyne. Ms. Ballantyne was educated in the US, completing her PhD in linguistics at the University of Texas at Austin in 2000. Since then, she has been based at Utrecht University (UU), and is currently appointed at University College (UC). She served as UC’s senior tutor from 2009-2013 and at UU teaching fellow from 2013-2015 (project title Tutor as Educator), and, with Eric Mijts, helped co-found the current UA-UU student research collaboration.
